11. Melissa

We all had a wonderful time at the waterfront. I was glad Dr. Rogers suggested it. We ate at one of the many seafood restaurants along the water. The view was breathtaking, the food was amazing, and the company was great. Still, I couldn't get Simpy – ugh, I've got to stop calling her that – I couldn't get Cindy out of my mind.

It was the next morning. I spent the night in my apartment alone, but Jeff came in and fucked me really good before leaving. Neither of us had slept alone in several days. And as a result, we had both neglected to take care of a lot of day-to-day stuff like cleaning and paying bills. I got up early and took care of what I could before taking the T to work.

At the restaurant, Jeff and I came up with a plan to get Cindy off our asses once and for all. I told him he should just fire the bitch, but I guess it's not that simple. Too bad. That would've solved everything. So we had to figure out a way to get her in trouble before she got us in trouble.

“Good morning, Missy,” Ken said as I walked into the ER.

“Morning,” I replied.

“You been behaving yourself, I hope? Staying out of trouble?”

“Of course I have. I'm a good girl,” I said with the closest thing to a grin I could make ten seconds into the workday.

“Ha! You're a lot of things, Melissa Altwood. And you're definitely allllll girl. But you're far from good.”

Ken and I shared a laugh. But then I read between the lines of what he'd asked me and it disappeared quickly.

“Wait a minute,” I said. “Why did you ask if I've been staying out of trouble? Did you hear something?”

“Maybe,” Ken replied mischievously.

“Ken, tell me. Please. What did you hear? And from who?”

“Well, I can't tell you who I heard it from. But let's just say a little birdie told me.”

“Told you what?” I asked, already getting impatient.

“I heard that you and that handsome lawyer boyfriend of yours were caught going down into the basement together yesterday. And that was after the Chief told you he'd fire you if you got caught fooling around in the hospital with that sexy legal eagle again.”

“Who told you that?” I asked.

“I told you. I can't tell you.”

“There's only one person that knew other than me and Jeff,” I said, trying – and failing – to control my anger. “That little fucking cunt muffin.”

“Who?” Ken asked, trying – and failing – to hold back a laugh.

“Cindy, Jeff's assistant.”

“I can't tell you who I did hear it from. But I can tell you that I didn't hear it from her.”

“But like I said, Cindy was the only one who knew.”

“All I'll say is this,” Ken replied. “As you know, I've got eyes and ears all over this hospital. The gay gossip community is alive and thriving at Boston General. We've got people in just about every department.
